Contested spaces of illiberal and authoritarian politics: Human rights and democracy in crisis

چکیده
The global moral appeal of human rights and democratic governance appears to be in severe crisis. In both the Global North South, many countries have witnessed rise racist, sexist, illiberal politicians into highest positions government. As one Asia's oldest electoral democracies, Philippines is not an exception this pattern decline civil liberties governance. Considering case Philippines, article addresses following core question: How under which conditions do contestations as well legitimations Duterte regime emerge across domestic transnational spaces? This examines based on a spatially-oriented analysis official results 2016 2019 elections, while demonstrating multispatial against support liberal norms. While role geography spatialization formation authoritarian politics remains underappreciated, contributes disciplinary fields political geography, comparative politics, International Relations. Specifically, deploys spatial approach understanding territorially-contingent patterns politics.
